Potatoes and Politics A Nation’s Quiet Economic Reform
An ironic sketch praises a government scheme to buy and ruin surplus potatoes by spraying dye and returning them to the ground. It contrasts this “progress” with the stubborn wish of some people for more food while tracing a patriotic defense of the U S Constitution and the enduring republic through its early history and ongoing promise of freedom.

Yorktown Surrender Marked 160th Anniversary
The text notes Cornwallis surrendered 7,000 troops at Yorktown on October 19, 1781, marking a turning point in the American Revolution. It recalls Cornwallis’s southern advances, eventual loss of his positions, and the trap set by Washington and the French, plus the early postwar debate over a national government under the Articles of Confederation.
Weve Been in Danger Before
The Wall Street Journal rejects the claim America now faces its gravest peril. It recalls past dangers from Communist influence and political pressure, noting courts resisted subservience to the executive, and argues the country is better prepared today. Kansas economy and city government issues are touched, including Great Bend firing a city manager. The piece also critiques a presidential address and a familiar football alibi in local commentary.

Commission to Rule On Rate Hike in Ten Days
Topeka October 1907 The Kansas Corporation Commission expects to decide in a week or ten days on Southwestern Bell Telephone Company’s request to make permanent the first of two temporary rate increases. Attorney Lloyd Miller said without the $3,215,000 temporary boost from January 1949 the utility would show a $1,500,000 loss from January 1949 to July 1950. Revenue from this increase plus another $3,500,000 temporary hike placed in a surplus fund would insure repayment to customers if permanent rates prove lower. The second rate hike was not involved in yesterday’s hearing.
