Social Security COLA small 1975 benchmark raised to 19 dollars
More than 56 million Americans on Social Security will receive a raise averaging 19 dollars a month in January, one of the smallest COLAs since automatic inflation adjustments began in 1975. Medicare premiums may offset much of the increase while about 10 million higher earners face Social Security tax increases next year as wages exceed the cap. The COLA reflects a still-low inflation outlook despite higher gasoline prices.

State Education Department to move to new state building
Kansas Department of Education will relocate from its decades long Scott Building site in Topeka to the London State Office Building east of the Statehouse. Education Commissioner Diane DeBacker announced at the Kansas State Board meeting that the move, starting next fall and to be complete by January 2014, reflects a shift to leasing from the state landlord. The department currently pays about $640,000 annually in rent and had explored private space options after bids on an alternate site.
