German warplanes mounted their 41st consecutive nightly raid on London and surrounding areas. Despite alarms and anti aircraft fire, most jets were repelled, with some bombs causing civilian casualties and a building collapse trapping workers.
The steamship President Coolidge en route to Yokohama endured a severe typhoon late yesterday. Five persons were seriously injured and many others bruised as furnishings were damaged. Wind velocity reached about 100 miles per hour with the ship now about a thousand miles from Japan.
British bombers attacked the French invasion coast along the Kentish shore tonight in thick mist. Detonations shook Dover and the Dover strait area while a light south westerly wind blew.
Senator Arthur Capper of Kansas departed Washington for Topeka to remain through the election. He planned a stop in Chicago to visit his sister before continuing to Topeka on Saturday.

Judge Hugh Means hears evidence in district court in the state versus W B Dalton and Justice Neale action to abate a nuisance. Dalton and Neale own dog kennels. neighbors alleged noisy dogs and poor feeding. Seventy nine witnesses were subpoenaed for the prosecution and defense. Evidence continued this afternoon.
In Kansas City on October 17 1940 delegates of the Episcopal church aim to complete the triennial convention five days early but have received no bids to host the 1943 gathering. Presiding Bishop Henry St George Tucker cites lack of invitations and high city costs as factors. Bishop Middleton S Barnwell proposes a $10 registration fee to offset hosting expenses.
The September welfare outlay totalled 17 554 57, down 556 28 from August 18 110 85, with net county cost 9 669 03 after reimbursements, 995 50 less than August. Case load rose to 924 on Oct 1 from 882 on Sept 1 as WPA aided items cut costs.

A total of 3 612 residents registered for selective service in Douglas County yesterday. 2 309 men registered at 26 county precincts, with 1 303 at four special sites including the University of Kansas. Lawrence city accounted for 1 387 registrations, rural precincts for 922. University of Kansas 1 083, Baker University 1 083, and Haskell Institute registrations noted, with draft board officers appointed and procedures outlined.
Topeka reports that Kansas registration figures in the first counties tallied below army estimates. Johnson county enrolled 3,554 of an expected 4,992, Greeley 204 of 245, with statewide polling likely under 250,000 of a 1,800,000 population base. Early counties Elk 795 Rush 899 Marion 1,944 Hamilton 333 Thomas 692. Twenty-three county clerks submitted totals.
The lineup for the Community Chest Drive includes The Social Service League Salvation Army Boy Scouts Girl Scouts Hi Y 4 H Annual Fair Christmas Activities July 4th celebration and more. The drive excludes Red Cross and T B Association funds. The Red Cross roll call begins November 11 directed by Rev Harold Barr. The T B Association will continue annual Christmas Seals and bonds financing.
The Civil Service Commission reports the federal executive branch added 91 036 civil employees from December 1939 to July 1940. July payroll rose to 1 023 341 personnel from 932 305 in December 1939, with 20 521 of the increase in the final month. The surge largely reflects the national defense program adding over 40 000 jobs.
British long range guns shelled a German torpedo carrying speedboat several miles off the French coast near Dover. The speedboat apparently escaped unhit as water spouts rose around it and with a Dornier flying boat circling above.
Secretary Stimson announced that the first 30,000 selective service troops will be inducted around November 18 with 600,000 recruits called through March 5. He outlined housing plans for 1,200,000 men and two new armored divisions to be formed next June, with Pine Camp New York and Camp Beauregard Louisiana as their headquarters. An $8,255,824 housing contract at Pine Camp was also noted.
Lester R. Kalb of Baldwin won the Douglas county cornhusking title with 24 bushels and 25.65 pounds in 80 minutes at the Dr F G Hagenbuch farm near Eudora. Boerkircher of Richland was runner-up with 23 bushels 56.22 pounds. nearly 1,000 spectators watched. Kalb will represent the county at Washington Kan on October 23, with the national contest near Davenport Ia on October 30.
Ottawa reports Cecil Vining a Richmond farmer and repeated state corn husking champion wins Franklin county with 25.11 bushels and qualifies for his eighth state contest in Washington on October 23. Vining previously held state titles in 1937 and 1938 and was runner up in five years. last year’s winner was Lawrence House of Goodland.
Federal Meteorologist S D Flora says no signs of change in a spell of unusually fine weather. Temperatures will hover between 40 and 80 with clear skies and little chance of rain. Highs today expected 70 to 75 in Kansas, 84 noted in Goodland yesterday, with cooler lows near 40 in Lebo.
Salesman Fred M. Broom of Alma Indiana faced charges of selling insurance in Kansas without a permit and was jailed here after failing to post a $250 bond at arraignment before Justice of the Peace Robert B. Over.
