Trees Need Much Water This Fall
An emergency meeting of the citizens' tree committee led by chairman C B Russell discussed re planting and repairing trees injured this summer. Professor Donald Durell urged ample water as trees enter winter, noting 20 percent of city trees planted last year died despite a wet summer. Two hundred oaks and hickories in Oak Hill cemetery perished. Planting should occur mid October to late November with elm maple hackberry and several oaks favored. Planting steps include digging a large hole, placing roots horizontally, mud dipping, wet soil, and mulch. Stakes and a hose wrap protect the trunk while keeping the ground moist.
