Pelzel Injured In Midland Highway Crash
William Pelzel 61 of Vermont Street was critically injured when struck by a car on Highway 10 near Midland shortly after midnight last Saturday. The driver, Kansas University student Robert Kenyon from Kansas City Missouri, was with George Varis, also a KU student. Pelzel was crossing from the north side toward the Midland store when struck and was later transported to Memorial Hospital in Lawrence.

Pioneer Kansan C. E. Warner Dies in Ottawa
C. E. Warner 86 a pioneer Kansan and noted manufacturer died at his Ottawa home from injuries suffered in a fall three weeks earlier. He came from Tremont Illinois in a covered wagon and founded the Warner industries making wire fence gasoline engines log saws and electrical refrigeration units. Funeral services will be Tuesday afternoon at the First Methodist church.

Kansas City Kan Oct 14 P A W Logan director of the Kansas department of inspections and registration said today cigaret bootleggers and tax evaders cost the state about 1 009 a day in taxes but after November 15 the new tax stamp will reduce evasion. Issuance of stamps began Sept 15 though dealers save old stock. Revenue from cigar et sales has risen since the tax law began in 1827. The old paper band will be replaced by a small stamp leaving ink impressions on packages. A common evasion method was removing the old band and reusing it, letting the retailer save 2 cents.

Car Hits Culvert near Belleville. Woman Killed
Mrs Laclede Jensen of Colorado Springs died and her husband was severely injured when their car crashed into a cement culvert three miles west of Belleville Kansas. Jensen was driving and suffered severe cuts and bruises while in a dazed condition hours after the crash. Witnesses said he dozed briefly before the collision.
