Coast Guard repatriates 462 Haitians from crowded freighter

The group, many fleeing poverty, had aimed to enter the United States illegally, with 1,158 Haitians intercepted this year. Most depart to the Bahamas before attempting Florida, as regional flow slows from the 1991 military crackdown and the 1994 invasion aftermath.

Russian protests call for Yeltsin resignation across Moscow

Hundreds of thousands of Russians, including workers, pensioners and students, marched, picketed, and chanted for President Boris Yeltsin to resign. Officials said 615,000 joined rallies nationwide, a turnout far below organizers predictions but with broader political reach and pressure on the Kremlin. Yeltsin dispatched aides denying a resignation, while unions and various groups framed the protest as a demand for accountability and economic reform.
