Papua New Guinea official says seven people were killed in a remote landslide southeast of Maramuni Station in Enga province. One young girl survived as officials refute earlier reports of up to 140 deaths after the disaster at Pafalangus village.
In Belgrade US envoy Richard Holbrooke pressed Yugoslav President Milosevic for a Kosovo settlement as NATO air strikes loomed. Milosevic refused to bow, insisting the government’s crackdown should continue while the US urged pullback and resumed talks. Clinton and Rubin voiced demand for negotiations, while Russia warned the move could provoke more bloodshed.
Washington officials reported a 47 percent drop in AIDS mortality in 1997 the largest yearly decline for any major cause of death. The life-saving antiviral therapies helped AIDS move from eighth to fourteenth place and about 15 000 people survived who would have died that year. Other major deaths also fell with heart disease cancer and stroke remaining the top three.
The top causes of death in 1997 show heart disease leading with 725 790 deaths, followed by cancer 537 390 and stroke 159 877. Lung diseases, accidents, and pneumonia and influenza also appear with 110 637, 92 191, and 88 383 deaths respectively.
The House passed a 27 billion Treasury-focused spending bill 290 to 137 after dropping language to require prescription contraceptives coverage for federal workers. A Democratic effort to revive the provision failed 226 to 202, as Republicans also removed items on Haitian immigration and a potential firing of FEC counsel Lawrence Noble. Senate approval and Clinton signature were expected, with White House opposition over the contraception clause. House leaders aimed to finish spending measures by the weekend.
