Stock Auction Supports 4-H and FFA Programs

The Douglas County Beef Breeders Association sponsors an auction of steers and heifers at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Lawrence Livestock Sale Barn to help 4-H and FFA members obtain calves for projects. Seven Angus steers, 12 Hereford steers, nine registered Angus heifers, and five registered Hereford heifers will be sold. Officers listed include Claude Beeks president Don Palmateer vice president Carol Martin secretary-treasurer Raymond Ice and Theo Walter.

KU ASC Changes Meeting Frequency and Conference Plans

The Kansas University All Student Council votes to meet twice a month, effective in about three weeks. KU student leaders Leo Schrey and four peers attend the Second National Conference of ASG USA at Purdue University in Terre Haute Indiana October 14 to 17. Deborah Fowler, KU American Royal Queen candidate, departs for Kansas City competition with the coronation set for Saturday night. Homecoming dance tickets for Lawrence High School students are available through the counseling office. Democratic Party state chair Tom Corcoran speaks at KU Tuesday evening.

Engineers Seal Cave That Trapped 15 Year Old Boy

In Medina Ohio engineers blasted shut the cave mouth after rescuing Morris Baetzold 15 from a V shaped crevice at Whipps Ledges near Hinckley. He was stuck 60 feet from the mouth and 35 feet underground for more than 25 hours. A 15 year old Boy Scout Mike Ulrich crawled in three times to attach ropes and pull him out. Morris survived with minor cuts and exhaustion and was taken to Medina Community Hospital.

US Forces In Que Nhon Area Kill 18 Viet Cong

U S forces pushed into fighting around Qui Nhon killing 18 Viet Cong in a central Viet Nam operation. Paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Brigade killed 17 guerrillas and the 1st Cavalry Division killed one while detaining two suspects about 10 miles west of Qui Nhon. The clash marked the first direct entry of U S troops into the fighting north of the town between the Vietnam army 22nd Division and four Communist regiments. Reds suffered heavy casualties along Highway No 1 and Phu Cu Pass in recent weeks.

Two Brothers Die Trying to Save Siblings in Utah Fire

In Ogden Utah AP two boys Kevin 10 and Gregory 7 died as they reentered a burning home to rescue sister Debbie 11 and baby Bryce 3. Fire started in a basement sleeping bag and the family fought the flames as Debbie led others to safety.
