Lawrence to declare American Indian Day beside Columbus Day

Lawrence city commissioners plan to proclaim Monday Columbus Day as American Indian Day in a move urged by Haskell Indian Junior College. Mayor Bob Schulte emphasized acknowledging Native American populations and the long history before Columbus. The 6:35 p.m. meeting at City Hall will discuss the proclamation.

Building permit totals rebound in city in September

The city saw a surge in building permits with September valuation at 6.91 million dollars, up from August and the strongest since spring. Residential permits led the gain with 3.16 million for new single family homes and 34 permits, as commercial activity also contributed, aided by Wal-Mart’s site permit, reflecting a market buoyed by pre winter activity.

TV film to be shot in city seeks local 9 year old star

A casting call for a 9 year old Hispanic boy will be held in Topeka for a TV film starring Karl Malden. Auditions run Wednesday 3 5 PM at the Lawrence Arts Center and 5 30 7 30 PM at the Ramada Inn. The child needs no acting experience and must be at least 5 9. Filming starts Monday at Lawrence and Topeka sites for Why Have They Taken Our Children set in 1977 Chowchilla kidnapping. The project is from Kansas Filmworks, following Dead Before Dawn with Cheryl Ladd, and Malden is a veteran Oscar winner.
