Wellsville Bond Approval After Third Try At 289

Wellsville Unified School District 289 wins approval for a 997000 bond plan to add 16 classrooms and facilities to the combined high school and junior high with an 11.5 mill levy. Voters backed the measure 488 to 172 in a special election, marking the third attempt after prior rejections in 1966 and April. The county commission set funding splits among six banks using a policy that halves deposits equally and halves by bank size. A bank asset schedule determined today distributes about 24 percent to First National Bank of Lawrence, 23 percent to Lawrence National Bank, 19 percent to Douglas County State Bank, 12 percent each to University State Bank and Baldwin State Bank, and 10 percent to Kaw Valley State Bank of Eudora.

Mumford Held in County Jail for Kidnapping

Dale E. Mumford, 20, of 817 Walnut, is held in Douglas County jail on second degree kidnapping charges with a $5,000 bond. He was to be arraigned in county court after being arrested Saturday afternoon following threats at gunpoint against Yvonne Jordan and Ronnie Jamerson at Lawrence High School and near the Jordan home.

City to Consider Zoning Change and Street Projects

Light Locations Set Along Sixth Street in Topeka

Kansas Power and Light Co. has staked locations along Sixth Street for new street lights. The contractor Power Constructors of Topeka expects delays and may not begin until late in the month, with completion hoped before year end. Additional lights planned for areas of North Lawrence, around the KU campus west side, and along Ninth Street.
