Gore letters reveal inner conflict over Vietnam service
Teenage Al Gore wrestled with enlisting versus opposing the war in 1966 letters to future wife Tip. He admired Harvard peer Denmark Groover III for joining despite campus opposition and fretted about reconciling his belief the war was wrong with duty to serve. Gore noted family tensions as his father campaigned against the war and his mother urged independence from politics.
