Lawrence City Council approves reduced Lawrence Electric franchise

At the October meeting the council granted the Lawrence Electric Light company a franchise with lower prices. The session covered numerous petitions on sewers sidewalks and street lighting. The trackless trolley and Stranger Valley franchise items were held over. The anti liquor ordinance passed after edits and the city budget items were addressed before adjournment.

Douglas County Good Roads Group Forms in Fraternal Aldhal

The Douglas County Good Roads association organized with 75 attendees. Officers elected include President W C G Head, Vice President A Andrews, Secretary Hugh Meany, Treasurer William Stone, and an executive committee with George Innes, W E Spalding, and J R Woodward. The group aims to improve country roads, especially leading to Lawrence, with the next meeting set for November 11 at the courthouse.

LaFollette in town for Old Home Week events in Lawrence

Wisconsin governor Robert LaFollette visited Lawrence en route from Manhattan to Baldwin. He spoke briefly to a Journal reporter at the Eldridge house, praised Kansas people and conditions, and dismissed public questions as routine. He noted an Old Home Week football game on McCook Field between Kansas freshmen and Haskell Indian second team.

Old Home Week Farm Exhibit Dazzles Douglas County

The Douglas county agricultural display in a central tent on Massachusetts Street draws strong praise for its superior farm products. Notable entries include a record pumpkin weighing 125 pounds with a 22 inch diameter, long squash, giant carrots and beets, with contributions from Grant township and J Boilevins. A parade by the Central Protective Association of Douglas County, KU and Parker bands, and a large turnout mark the event, as plans for tomorrow feature veterans’ events and a reception.

Celebration plans and gas display on Henry Street

Residents on the south side of Henry Street near Massachusetts Street will gather at Post Hall for a picnic dinner at noon. Speakers and camp fire follow at 2 30 p.m. with the W R C and Ladies of the G A R assisting in dinner prep and camp fire. A gas display will run tonight between 9 and 10 at the corner of Massachusetts and Henry Street, with two inch gas pipes rising thirty feet. The display repeats tomorrow evening. Window decorations by A Marks, Robertson Bros, The Fair, Harry Natchings, Dick Bros attract attention.

Tremendous Growth in U S Postal Revenue Declares Report

The postmaster general George Cortelyou will report the 1904 05 fiscal year broke all records with mail handled and money sent through the mails rising sharply. More letters packages and newspapers moved and postage stamps issued exceeded any prior period, boosting income by about 1 million. Total stamps and mailing devices issued surpassed 7.7 billion, including roughly 5.0 billion ordinary stamps.

Great Northern Overland Train Robbed Near Seattle

The Great Northern Overland train out of Seattle was robbed five miles from Balard as baggage and express cars were blown open. Seven men took part, with two riders trying to rob passengers.
