Douglas County ranks second to Johnson County as the fastest growing Kansas county based on a composite index of population and economic growth. Between 1962 and 1968 Douglas showed a 19 percent population rise, 82 percent retail sales growth, and a 59 percent gain in buying power, with Johnson and Sedgwick leading in some categories.

Mark Value Up As Dollar Rises Against Deutsche Mark

In Frankfurt the dollar fixed at a record low 3.7870 marks as Germany’s mark rallied after Bonn freed it from Central Bank control. The Bank later cut the dollar price to 3.790, while the open market saw 3.7850 marks per dollar. Sterling opened at 9.0520 marks as market volatility grew and European officials urged swift return to a fixed rate.

KC Building Strikes End With Signing

Kansas City ends its longest spate of construction strikes as Teamsters Local 541 votes 147 to 23 to approve a wage contract with the Lumber Dealers Association. Immediate 69 cent hourly raise to 4.06, with staged raises to 4.46 and 4.81 by 1971. Other unions had walked out earlier, pausing many projects across the city.

Congressional sources say Judge Clement F. Haynsworth will ask President Nixon to withdraw his nomination to the Supreme Court. The White House was expected to announce the move later today as opposition to Haynsworth grew over several weeks.

United States and Saigon urge direct talks with Hanoi

At the Vietnam peace talks in Paris, South Vietnamese Ambassador Pham Dang Lam urged Hanoi and the Viet Cong to discuss self determination and elections with the Saigon government. Lam defended the republic as legitimate and called on Hanoi to negotiate. U S Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge accused the Communists of refusing meaningful dialogue with the elected government of the Republic of Vietnam.

Tremors Hit Santa Rosa Injuring Many and Damaging Property

A pair of quakes in Santa Rosa California injured at least 24 people, damaged two houses, and disrupted power, gas, and water mains. A third milder tremor occurred early today, with foreshocks at 9:56 and 11:19 p.m. The shocks, centered near Santa Rosa and felt to Gilroy, registered between 5.5 and 5.6 on the Richter scale. Police and responders cordoned off downtown. 50 workers shut off gas and crews battled minor fires as hospitals treated glass-related injuries and one neck fracture.

Record-lows in American combat deaths amid lull in Vietnam

The U.S. Command reports 95 Americans killed in the week ending Saturday, the lowest weekly toll in two years, with South Vietnamese casualties rising to 308 and American wounded at 1,315. Enemy killed declined to 2,382 as four North Vietnamese divisions pulled back toward the Cambodian border.

Dust Settler Brings Cooling Rain To Lawrence

A dust settler moved through Lawrence Wednesday night bringing about 0.05 inches of rain and easing heat. The day topped at 84, with noon reads near 70. Thursday forecasts call for fair skies and a warming trend ahead of a cold front likely to bring rain Friday or Saturday. Highs in the low 80s today and upper 50s tonight. Thursday highs in the 80s.

House funds approved for Clinton and Lawrence flood control projects

The House appropriations committee approved a flood control bill totaling 671.982 million dollars with Kansas allocations. Lawrence gets 1.2 million for the second stage levee, Clinton 1 million for land acquisition, and Perry Reservoir receives 3.8 million to finish construction.
