Preliminary hearings for James A. Spillman 19 of 1338 Brook and James ages 21 of 1603 W. 15th are set for 10 30 am Oct 17 in Douglas County District Court. Each faces illegal possession of marijuana after police stopped a truck they were driving and found evidence of harvested marijuana. Bond set at 1500 for each.

Syndicate Behind Picking of Drug Harvest Suspected

Mer vy n W Purdy of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation told a Kansas legislative committee that signs point to a crime syndicate recruiting out of state residents to harvest wild marijuana in Kansas. He cited 150 to 175 arrests and seizures up to 2,000 pounds in rented trailers, with many arrestees ex convicts or on parole. The ring may be linked to the Mafia with a Nevada base in South Tahoe as Operation Intercept boosts concern.

No Syndicate Links Found in Douglas County Marijuana Arrests

Douglas County Sheriff Rex Johnson said arrests this year on marijuana possession show no evidence of syndicate ties. Twenty five arrests involve twenty three individuals with most in transit or locally tied. eight groups include mostly locals with few outside connections. Preliminary hearings are pending for four, three cases were dismissed, and one man pled guilty to illegal possession.

Milwaukee County Judge F Ryan Duffy Jr ordered arrest of Rev James E Groppi for defying a restraining order and marching into the Wisconsin Capitol He could face probation violation hearings that might revoke two year probation from Feb 12 1968 and trigger six months in the House of Correction Groppi planned a noon Capitol rally as deputies surrounded the building and protests continued at the university campus demanding welfare cuts reversal with today’s events and earlier demonstrations prompting an injunction and state guardsmen deployment.
