Justice Hugo L. Black told a large radio audience that he joined the Ku Klux Klan 15 years ago, resigned later, and never used or kept the so called card. He asserted the Klan issue is closed and pledged fair decision making when he sits on the high court next Monday.
Alberta premier William Aberhart pushes a bill to force newspapers to publish government policy and reveal confidential sources, threatening publication bans. The six Alberta dailies denounce it as a move toward dictatorship, while reporters vow to resist despite the premier’s threats.
The court's new term opens with focus on Hugo Black's fitness while reviewing over 400 cases including federal aid for municipal power plants and the Tennessee Valley Authority. Albert Levitt challenges Black's seat on constitutional grounds. Other major issues include Wagner Act objections and government loans for publicly owned hydroelectric plants.

In Detroit on West Jefferson avenue a contractor crew was trapped by a sandboil during sewer construction. Five men died and a dozen were hospitalized after an air lock failure and collapsing shield forced hydraulic pressure to blow the scaffold into the air. Police said about 30 workers were trapped. A nearby sandpile children were nearby but unharmed.
Washington reporters quote Frank McNinch new chairman of the communications commission stating he will push legislation to bring rates under commission regulation. He questioned the wisdom of leaving public utility charges free of regulation and previously called radio a public utility.

Local veterinarians report encephalomyelitis or sleeping sickness in horses is on the decline in Kansas, helped by barn confinement and insect sprays. Two new cases were seen last week, with fatalities from under 10 to 15 percent. Immunization is advised this fall, about five dollars per horse for a three week process, and mules show stronger resistance. State livestock officials say the peak has passed but cautions remain against non professional cures.
