Kansas couple seeks two-mother birth certificate in landmark case
Brown and his partner sought a birth certificate listing both women as parents after a hospital declined to name them. A district court granted an emergency termination of parentage petition directing KDHE to issue the certificate, but the agency would not respond, prompting a new motion to join the vital statistics office and its secretary as defendants. The couple argues state law recognizing artificial insemination and a 2013 Kansas Supreme Court decision support two mothers’ parental status, while KDHE reviews the suit.
