City commissioners consider scrapping 15 aged rules to curb moral offenses and update codes. Law students say indecent language and other acts are already covered by disorderly conduct and new statutes, sparking moves toward broader legal freedom on loitering cohabitation and vagrancy reforms.
President elect Jimmy Carter says he has urged U S steel producers to reverse recent price hikes to avoid giving oil exporting nations an excuse to raise petroleum prices. He says producers were noncommittal and warns higher steel costs could worsen global inflation. prices take effect Wednesday amid Ford era price stability reviews.
Convicted killer Gary Gilmore told the Utah Board of Pardons that he seeks nothing from them as the panel weighs whether his death by firing squad should stand. He criticized Gov. Ramp ton as a moral coward and urged the board to uphold his sentence despite a hunger strike.
A court appointed attorney asked Justice Powell to delay the Dec 10 execution of Robert Excell White, who opposes any federal appeal. White said he is mentally prepared to accept the sentence and instructed his lawyer not to pursue further appeals.
Kansas City AP report says Farmland Industries and Far-Mar Co directors approved a merger plan. Farmland’s annual convention will discuss the merger as Far-Mar Co votes at its Denver meeting Feb 10-11. Farmland posted 1.8 billion in sales for the year ending Aug 31, with the merger likely pushing near 3 billion.
Snow flurries are expected tonight across a zone from Concordia to Lawrence with a 20 to 30 percent chance of accumulation. A general warming trend resumes Wednesday as overnight lows dip into the teens and early afternoon highs reach the 30s.
A university committee advises remodeling Watson Library and adding a second building on the old military sciences site to consolidate branch libraries. They propose upgraded plumbing wiring ventilation acoustics and expanded seating for up to 3000 students with planning funds sought in 1979.
About half the candidates for Douglas County office had filed 1976 campaign expense reports as of Monday four days before the deadline. Five of 13 candidates had submitted, with a Friday deadline for county offices and a 10 day extension possible for late filers.
