Gap in earnings widening between men and women in 1974

Labor Department data show the average fulltime man earned about $5 000 more than the average woman in 1974 with the gap rising from 56.4 percent in 1955 to 74.8 percent in 1974. Women were concentrated in lower paying jobs and many entered the workforce at beginner levels.

Whomper Recycling Center to Close After Low Prices

The Whomper Inc recycling project in Lawrence will close December 18 due to slim profits from low price for recycled newspaper and weak monthly tonnage. Once a booming venture funded by KU Student Senate, it will end as the city loses its day to day paper recycling center though volunteer drives may continue.

Congressman Winn says he returned envelope of cash in 1972

Rep Larry Winn R Kan disclosed he unknowingly received an envelope with $100 bills from a Korean in October 1972 and immediately returned it after realizing its contents. He said he did not discuss the incident with officials and has had no further offers since.

UF drive at 95 percent of goal amid Thanksgiving slowdown

The United Fund drive reports $224,899 raised, 95 percent of the $237,480 target, as of today at UF headquarters. The campaign, extended to December 10, will fund 19 social service agencies, with $12,550 still needed and divisions led by chairmen and co chairmen.

City commissioners will consider revising the bawdy house ordinance to read houses of prostitution and approve Orchards rezoning for multifamily housing. They will also weigh Edgehill Court parking tweaks, a 60 day trash pickup trial for Lawrence Apartment Owners Assn, and updates to storage fencing and city code. A preliminary hearing is set for Joyce A. McCullough on multiple theft and assault charges.

Local man faces December 22 preliminary hearing in beating case

Joseph Gardner, 22, of 3323 Iowa, is set for a Dec 22 preliminary hearing on aggravated battery and misdemeanor battery charges after a reported beating of Carol D Parks, 24, who required hospitalization. Gardner’s friend Robert Anthony, 24, was reportedly kicked while intervening but not hospitalized and is not charged. Bond is set at $6,000.

Eudora Council to hear dog pound ideas tonight

Two representatives from the Lawrence Humane Society will discuss temporary solutions for the Eudora dog pound at the 7:30 p.m. city council meeting. Sue Hess and Pat Ireland will propose ideas including temporary dog houses and hay shelters after a recent inspection and a complaint. Also on the agenda are east side parking at city hall and sale of a city pickup.
