Defectors Had Ties to Soviet Secret Police

Two European born U S soldiers who defected to the Soviet Union in 1960 were found to have prior ties to the Soviet secret police. Vladimir Sloboda born in Ukraine and Joseph Dutkanicz a Polish native died in Lvov. both cited revulsion at U2 flights. Army notes Sloboda later broadcast anti U S messages and Dutkanicz worked in a television factory before his death.

Big Eight Coaches Hold Meetings in Kansas City

In Kansas City AP report says Big Eight Conference coaches began a round of meetings expected to last through Wednesday. Track baseball swimming and wrestling coaches joined session with athletic business managers. Football coaches join an all-day session Tuesday and will attend the Tuesday noon luncheon of the Kansas City By-Line Club.

Bright Accident Record For Holiday Weekend In City

A Saturday truck car collision at 19th and Learnard caused $2200 damage and one minor injury. Driver Larry D. Thirsk 26 and John M. Jewett 68 were involved. Two more minor injuries occurred Sunday at Sixth and Rockledge in a separate two car crash injuring Mrs. J A Tuggle and Cheryl Musik.

Temperatures Fall To New Record Low In Lawrence

Murrow Undergoes Second Surgery in New York

Edward R. Murrow, the 56 year old journalist and former U.S. Information Agency director, has undergone another operation at New York Hospital. A spokesman said the last report noted he was doing nicely after a prior lung surgery, but he did not reveal the nature of the latest procedure. Murrow entered the hospital on November 8 for a checkup.
