Pope John XXIII is reported to suffer a gastropathy aggravated anemia at 81. Vatican communique urges special prayers for his recovery while noting he remains under medical care and rest. Church officials say he may resume normal duties as soon as possible despite age and recurring health issues.
The Kansas University Art Museum prepares a Central American drawing and painting show scheduled for December and January. Customs delays in Louisiana hold crates without an inventory, delaying opening. Public reception set 3 to 5 p.m. The exhibition, Pintores Centro Americanos, is the first of its kind in the U.S. with works from Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Panama.
A federal grand jury indictment in Minneapolis accuses Honeywell Regulator Co and two Midwest firms along with five company officers of conspiring to fix prices in pneumatic temperature control systems violating the Sherman act. Defendants include Honeywell, Johnson Service Co of Milwaukee, Powers Regulator Co of Skokie, and named officers Haines, Crysler, Colby, Fickett, and Stevens.
Jefferson City AP reports Richard H. Walker age 53, escaped Missouri Penitentiary today after a commuted sentence. He left in a new prison suit with $25 and a bus ticket to Kansas City. Walker previously served two months of a 14 year escape period and plans to return to Cheopta Kansas to join a wife and children on relief rolls. Authorities had recaptured him last September but did not prosecute the escape. The Governor commuted the remaining term on an armed robbery conviction, leaving about a year and eight months to serve.
Witnesses describe Andrews as quiet and polite, sensitive to suffering, with no criminal record. His minister notes his size and isolation from peers. Governor Anderson weighs possible last moves. Lansing last carried out a hanging in 1954, with military executions later moved to Ft Leavenworth.
Patricia Kennedy Lawford, sister of the President, was sentenced to a two part community service for driving with an expired operator license. She will inspect a wrecking yard and survey patients at Kennedy Child Guidance Center at St. John’s Hospital, reporting on accident injuries. The judge, W Blair Gibbons, is noted for unusual penalties.

Senator Strom Thurmond said unofficial information reported unidentified high flying planes over the Southeastern United States. He noted they may have been from the Air National Guard base near Columbia, South Carolina, to check on unidentified aircraft over the state.
Haskell Institute superintendent Solon G. Ayers and Mrs Ayers will be guests of honor at an informal reception at 8 o'clock tonight in Sacajawea Hall on the campus. Ayers has led Haskell for 20 years and plans to leave December 1 to become area director of Indian schools in the Portland region. This afternoon students offered a tribute program.
A radio equipped karate operator, a highway patrolman, and a farmer aided in arresting three men after a 14662 robbery of the Bank of Edgerton. Sousley Baker and Leuzinger face federal charges. Tanner, the farmer, provided crucial license plate data leading to a statewide manhunt.
The Kennedys and Eisenhowers join a star-studded effort to raise 30 million dollars for a national cultural center. Leonard Bernstein hosts the two hour, 60 city TV broadcast featuring Marian Anderson, Robert Frost, Eugene O Neill works, and Frederic March with Florence Eldridge. President and Mrs. Kennedy attend a charity dinner in Washington with celebrities from Los Angeles Chicago and New York among others contributing to the fundraiser.
A two car crash on U S 59 near Pleasant Grove Hill seven miles south of town caused an estimated 500 damage. No injuries were reported. Trooper Dick Krasnicka cited thick ground level fog as the direct cause. Northbound driver Imojean Harsh, 35, of Ottawa, stopped for a halted vehicle and was hit from behind by Grace Balbino, 18, also of Ottawa.
The Miami News reports that 300 tons of contaminated beef from the Soviet bloc arrived in Cuba. The discovery followed extensive public distribution of much of the meat, as stated by the News.
In Renovo Pennsylvania a Keating residence burned early today killing nine of Walter N Brown's twelve members. The dead include his wife Wilma 47 and children Marlene 15 Leona 13 Daniel 10 Susan 8 Linda 7 Nancy 5 and Bradley 4. Two children not at home at the time were staying elsewhere and a married relative lives at another address. The two story eight room house stood in Keating a remote Clinton County village near Kenovo and Lock Haven.
Kaw Valley farmers meet Friday at City Hall with Army Corps of Engineers officials to map a proposed 13 mile levee system. City Manager Harold Horn says the session is exploratory and will refine the levee center lines amid county district disputes. The $3 million project aims to prevent floodwaters equal to 1951 levels.
U S and Soviet sources say Thant of Burma will be kept as UN secretary general until late 1966. He would serve a full five year term dating from his acting start on November 3, 1961. The decision followed Cuban crisis talks between American and Soviet negotiators.
Two Kansas University students, Robert Bettcher age 20 and Michael Olson age 18, were bound over to the May term of District Court after waiving preliminary hearings on forgery and passing forged checks. Each posted 1500 dollars bond and admitted passing about 12 forged checks ranging from 10 to 35 dollars at several locations. The arrest followed a merchant noting the car’s license plate after accepting a forged check.
