A promotional notice trumpets United States and Lawrence City Funding Bonds as safe municipal securities. It claims a 4 percent US bond yields 409 yearly on 1000 and a $1000 purchase buys over 1250 city bonds at 6.5 percent yielding $75 annually. Bonds are secured by strict laws, mandate debt limits, and force tax levies with penalties on officials for failure. Investments urged via Merchants' Bank with small sale units. A late scientist Prof. B F Mudge and Dr C P Blackley explored a mound on Blue Mount near Manhattan. They unearthed bird bone beads, shell fragments, flint chips, many human bones, and a nearly complete skeleton laid eastward in a sitting posture. The mound shows layered construction of marl loess stones and soil with the skeleton deeply embedded.
A mound 15 to 40 feet wide atop a terrace near Manhattan yields human heads teeth and arrow heads beneath the top flagging, suggesting offerings to the dead.
