Opening of a Mound and Skeleton Discovery Nearby Manhattan

A late scientist Prof. B F Mudge and Dr C P Blackley explored a mound on Blue Mount near Manhattan. They unearthed bird bone beads, shell fragments, flint chips, many human bones, and a nearly complete skeleton laid eastward in a sitting posture. The mound shows layered construction of marl loess stones and soil with the skeleton deeply embedded.

Ancient mound near Manhattan yields remains and views

A mound 15 to 40 feet wide atop a terrace near Manhattan yields human heads teeth and arrow heads beneath the top flagging, suggesting offerings to the dead. It is the third such mound found west of the Missouri, after Leavenworth and Junction City, signaling more discoveries along the Kansas River.
