Man and Son Killed In Auto Mishap Near Questa

Two members of a Nickerson Kansas family died in a one car crash two miles south of Questa New Mexico. Gerald W. Frank 34 and his son Eric 3 perished when the car left the road and went down a canyon. Patricia 31 Karen 2 were in extremely critical condition at St. Vincent Hospital. Janice 7 suffered a broken ankle.

KU Chancellor Reinforces Equal Treatment on University Trips

Chancellor Laurence Chalmers issued a memo to deans and heads mandating that KU students be treated equally on all university related trips. The note requires written assurances from visiting communities when doubt exists, after incidents involving three black symphony members in Clay Center. Housing for two students was canceled following revelations of their race.

Doug Weaver to Join Stevens Brand Law Firm

Doug Weaver will become associated with Stevens Brand and Brand after graduating from Kansas University School of Law in January. Weaver, former Kansas State football coach, studied law at KU from February 1967 and played football at Michigan State University. He served in the Air Force before coaching stints at Michigan State and Missouri, then Kansas State, and has assisted Pepper Rodgers at KU Law School.

Fire cancels Lawrence High girls gym classes

Lawrence High School canceled girls gym classes for Tuesday and today after a trash fire Monday night caused smoke damage to the locker room. Principal William Medley said the fire burned out and the fire department was not initially called. About 400 girls must wash gym suits, and classes remain halted for the rest of the week. The fire is believed to have started from a cigarette tossed into a storage container for girls clothing or items left on the floor.

Theft Reported Of TVs Radios At Wonnell Appliance

Televisions and radios valued at 1827 dollars and 35 cents were stolen from Wonnell Appliance at 421 East Fourth between 2 and 8 a.m. Tuesday. The break in shattered the front door window and the thief took four color televisions three black and white sets and eight radios. Store owner Earl R. Wonnell.

Fire destroys Robert Paynes home in early morning blaze

Early today the Payne residence on U S 40 near Lawrence was destroyed by a fire of undetermined origin. Fire officials estimate damage at 40 000 while noting contents may be higher and that the home was unoccupied at the time.

County Refuses Zoning Request For Junk Yard

Douglas County Commission rejects the rezoning petition by J. W. Calvert to change farmland near K 10 east of the Farmer's Co op to light industrial. The junk yard operates on non conforming status since 1966 and expired. Commission mulls Dale Swisher landfill proposal for near Eudora. decision due next Wednesday at 10 a.m.

Moon Halo Over Lawrence and Local Thanksgiving Plans

Bright halo around the moon observed in Lawrence from about 3 a.m. to sunrise. Kansas City area meteorologists attribute the halo to ice crystals in cirrus clouds. Thanksgiving meals planned at Douglas County jail and Haskell Institute with parades, games, and dinners. Eight prisoners held. classes canceled in district 497 and St. John’s School. later resumption announced. Tree plantings underway to replace Dutch elm disease damaged trees ordered by the city. Arcie Zimmerman, 58, seriously injured after being struck in the 600 block North Second. he remains in poor condition at Lawrence Memorial Hospital following a collision with Ronald Thies.

County Issues Order to Move From Properties

Douglas County with a new judicial and law enforcement complex orders 20 property owners to vacate by March 1 unless extended occupancy is arranged. Rent at 1 percent per month of final valuation applies if they stay beyond the cutoff. Owners may remove shrubs and personal belongings not bought by the county. Condemnation approved November 10.

Laird pledges full compliance amid My Lai controversy

Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird testified to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee amid debate over the My Lai massacre. He pledged absolute compliance with orders and laws of war in response to questions about 1st Lt. William Calley and the March incident. Six Candidates Interview for Lawrence City Manager

Six candidates began interviews for the Lawrence city manager post this week with one interview left. An informed source says a second screening is likely before the committee submits names to the city commission.
