FDA Tightens Warning on Morcellator Cancer Risk
The FDA strengthened its warning on laparoscopic power morcellators used in hysterectomy and fibroid removal, saying the cancer risk is justified for only a small group and urging manufacturers to add a boxed safety warning and two contraindications. About 50,000 procedures a year used the devices, with two dozen cancer-related reports since last December. Johnson & Johnson halted use and is recalling devices worldwide.
