KU freshman faces bomb explosion charge
Joel A. Cluchey an 18 year old Kansas University freshman faces a charge of possession of an explosive device after a Wednesday night blast in southeast Lawrence. Investigators say the device a four inch pipe bomb with gunpowder a pocket watch and two batteries exploded in his 1969 model car injuring two passengers lightly. He told police the bomb was to be used for killing pigeons under the Kansas River bridge but that it could have damaged the bridge and he planned to move the device to a rural area when it exploded. He is free on 2500 dollars bond awaiting court next week in Douglas County District Court.

Local man hurt after hitchhiking incident near Lawrence
Samuel Meade, 22, of 1900 West 31st, remained in fair condition at Kansas University Medical Center after jumping from a pickup on U S 59 south of Lawrence Tuesday night. An Ottawa man, who gave Meade a ride, reported the incident as the vehicle traveled at an estimated 40 to 50 mph.
