Car Demolished In Crossing Crash Near Pittsburg
Ernest Lay, a Kansas City Southern fireman, was near death after his car struck a Santa Fe freight train three miles north of Pittsburg. The collision derailed several freight cars and left Lay with a fractured skull and other injuries. Navy Pilot Dies As Bristol Bulldog Crashes In Dive
Lieutenant George T. Cuddihy, a veteran Navy pilot, was killed when a British Bristol Bulldog being tested at Anacostia crashed during a dive from about two miles. The nose buried 10 feet in the earth, and rescuers labored over an hour and a half to extricate his body. A board of inquiry will review the accident, with parts of the wreck still missing. Cuddihy, born in Mt. Clemens Michigan in 1896, held a 1924 seaplane speed record and flew in the Schneider Cup race. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1927 and served on the USS Mississippi before entering aviation.
