Kansas lawmakers weigh tests of suitable provision in school funding
Kansas lawmakers debate the meaning of suitable provision in Article 6 as they review the Gannon decision and potential constitutional amendments. Stakeholders, including House Speaker Ron Ryckman and Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley, express concerns about equity in funding and possible reforms to end the recurring funding cycle. Rep Blaine Finch leads a joint committee to analyze the decision and explore options, with meetings set for December to assess responses and future safeguards.

City faces loss as skating rink numbers plunge and costs rise
City officials examined the skating rink's finances, noting losses over 12 thousand dollars last season and rising installation and maintenance costs. Commissioner Matthew Herbert criticized ongoing spending as sunk costs, while sales fell from about 8,600 passes in 2014 to 2,000 in a later year. The rink sits in storage with no clear future plan unless temperatures permit seasonal use.

Johnson's Yellitt Bee earns acclaim and personal reflection
Prolific author Kit Johnson discusses her novella Yellitt Bee a reimagining of Lovecraft's The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath. She creates Vellitt Boe a middle aged female mathematician professor on a quest to rescue a missing student while addressing lack of female leads in fantasy. Johnson notes the challenge of balancing teaching and writing and hints at a sabbatical and Gothic future projects.
