Cattle roasted in Santa Fe stock car blaze

Torexa Kansas diary Nov 22 Sixteen head of cattle burned to death as a Santa Fe stock car caught fire near Wakatusa station. Train No 36 en route to Chicago was halted when the fire spread through the car and neighboring stock cars. Firefighters and crew freed others and saved two cars worth of cattle after the blaze consumed the wooden car. Spectators watched the horrific scene for about an hour.

Prominent Citizen Drowned in Barrel in Topeka

Ed Buechner, 52, a noted Topeka resident, was found dead this morning at his shop after allegedly slipping and drowning in a barrel used to catch refrigerator drip water. The barrel, two thirds full and containing celery, caused speculation about heart failure as the butcher reached for the celery.

Indianapolis health officer reports diphtheria rise among public school pupils since fall opening. Spread blamed on distribution of lead pencils and penholders used daily at the teachers desk and later redistributed. Children may held them in mouths, enabling transmission. High diver leaps from bridge at 129 feet

Two Children Murdered in Wisconsin Bed

Two young children Willie and Lillie Cornwell aged six and four were found murdered in their bed. Their father Ernest Cornwell had his throat cut from ear to ear and remained alive, unable to explain the crime. A boarder John Lewis charged after drinking with Cornwell. Canvass row sparks protest over state returns

Nebraska Nov 22 The state canvassing board met to canvass election returns. A formal protest signed by Secretary Sizer of the Republican State Committee and many citizens will accuse the canvass in at least twenty two counties. The charge alleges Secretary of State Porter unlawfully opened envelopes and scanned returns.
