W R Holway, engineer of Tulsa’s Spavinaw water project, refuses to withhold $15,000 final payment via sealing it in a tin container inside the conduit. Officials say he has been paid. Holway offered to let officials seal the check at the conduit end and recover it after reaching the reservoir in Tulsa, but a day-early water delivery and delays led to abandonment of the plan.
Laurel Perfexction, shown by Kansas City owners, won grand champion at the American Royal Livestock Show, defeating Prince Dominic junior champion from Littleton. About 2,300 cattle participated in the fair this year.
Mexican charged with stealing a goal from a Santa Fe freight car last Friday. The trial was continued until Friday morning at 9 o'clock. His bond remains renewed at 500 dollars.

A blaze last night around 10:30 burned the barn at Kelsey farm on the Fort to Fort highway, killing two horses, four cattle and a calf. Mr Kelsey’s two cars and a nearby milk house also burned while fire crews sprayed water from cisterns, but the barn was leveled and animals lost.

President Coolidge appoints John Vatt MacMurray of New Jersey as assistant secretary of the department. He led the far eastern division for years, specializes in orient questions, and has served in the diplomatic corps at Peking and Tokyo.

Nearly eighty Douglas county farmers, Lawrence business men and agricultural students will depart from the Chamber of Commerce in Lawrence tomorrow at 7 am for a two day motor tour to observe dairy development near Fort Scott and Iola. The group will meet Fort Scott and travel to Bourbon and Allen counties visiting Hum boldt and Iola dairies with luncheons and a dinner program. Local businessmen will provide cars and cover student costs. farmers and businessmen will pay their own expenses.
The Hi V club at the high school is organizing ahead of a conference in Manhattan on November 28 to 30. A delegation from the club will be chosen to represent Lawrence at the event.
