KU student Amber Lucian becomes first undergraduate woman to receive Marine Corps Commandant's Trophy
Amber Lucian, a 23 year old KU senior from Columbus Kansas, received the Commandant's Trophy for her top performance at Officer Candidate School in Quantico Virginia. Ed Meyen KU executive vice chancellor also received the award for KU's role in her education. Lucian described the ceremony as emotional and nerve wracking, with her mother Frieda Lancaster expressing pride and newfound patriotism. Lucian joined the Navy after community college, endured boot camp in Orlando and Pensacola school, then attended Officer Candidate School with 75 in her all woman platoon. She ranked 17th overall when combined with four male platoons and will graduate in May with an anthropology degree and commission as a second lieutenant, heading to The Basic School in Quantico. Two Die In Kansas Weekend Traffic Accidents
Weekend accidents in Kansas claimed two lives with injuries to others. Roger Grecius of Independence likely died Friday night on a Montgomery County road. the crash was not reported until Saturday morning. A second fatality, Jeffrey T. Wilson, 25, of Rose Hill, died when his car left the road near Wichita around 8:45 p.m. Friday. Wilson served in the Air Force at McConnell AFB.

Pharmacy to Offer Free Lung Function Checks This Week
The Medicine Shoppe at 1807 Mass will sponsor free lung function tests from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday with no appointment needed. The screenings, a joint effort with the American Lung Association, American Cancer Society, Allen and Hanburys, and Marion-Merrell Dow, screen for breathing problems linked to emphysema, lung cancer, bronchitis, and asthma. Tests are not diagnostic and do not replace a doctor visit. If results suggest issues, patients are urged to see a physician for further testing and diagnosis. The Town and Country Republican Women have rescheduled their meeting to 6:30 p.m. Monday at Country Kitchen, inviting Republican candidates and elected officials.
