150 in Parade for Peace Protest in Lawrence Kansas

About 150 people braved cold to march down Massachusetts Street to Central Park in a Parade for Peace. The Lawrence Committee for Peace in Vietnam organized the event with a speak-in at South Park as moratorium activities protested the war.

Open house displays art and projects at Bess Stone Center

Lawrence events include an open house 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Bess Stone Activity Center 745 Ohio showcasing adult and youth projects. The center and the Douglas County Association for Retarded Children sponsor the event. Public Works Director George Williams cites November 25 as the target date for unveiling the five year street improvement plan. The Kansas pheasant season opens east of US 81 today with a daily bag limit of three cocks and quail bag limit of eight. Lawrence police investigated 11 minor accidents Friday with no serious injuries.

Art teacher Rosemary Cattrell inherited a painting she planned to sell for 48 dollars to put toward a used car deposit. Sothebys valued The Temptation of Eve at about 100000 dollars, calling it a major postwar discovery. The work is attributed to Hans Balung and will be auctioned on December 3.

Rice of Baldwin Charged in Burn Attack

Ales C. Rice, 54, Baldwin, jailed on felonious assault charges after allegedly pouring scalding water on his nephew Clarence E. Rice, 23, at their Baldwin home. Clarence treated for first and second degree burns at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Preliminary hearing set for Nov. 21.

KU to Meet Needs Of Black Students

Kansas University states it will meet the needs of black students within the existing structure and staff, not by creating a separate university. The BSU proposed offices of a dean of black students, expanded black studies, and an Afro-American Institute of Research and Community Development, plus Malcolm X Hall, but KU cites a $100 million building need over the next decade and prioritizes integrated programs.

Car Recovered and Stolen Vehicles Reported

Police recovered a 1955 car owned by John W. Clifford at 5 p.m. Friday in the 1300 block of Rhode Island after a woman reported the vehicle parked there for two weeks and the plates altered. A second stolen vehicle, a 1969 foreign model owned by Robert C. Fry, was taken from 1347 Mass. between 4 and 5 a.m. today with the ignition key left in place.

Fire crews respond to chimney blaze at Vogel home

Lawrence fire department was dispatched to John Vogel on Rt. 4 at 11 36 a m Friday to investigate smoke seen between chimney bricks. No damage occurred.
