About 35 residents attended the final public hearing Monday on the proposed zoning ordinance. The City Planning Commission will meet Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in City Hall to craft recommendations to the City Commission.
Kansas Senator James B. Pearson will speak at the Haskell Indian Institute Veterans Day program at 3 20 p m Wednesday in the school auditorium. Taps will be played as wreaths are placed at the World War II memorial in Haskell Auditorium and at the Korean War memorial in Stidham Union. The colors will be presented by an honor guard including veterans on the Haskell staff. Rev Weldon L Patton will give the invocation and members of the Indian Club will introduce the Senator. The processional and recessional will be played by the Haskell band directed by Flores. A reception will follow in Sacajewea Hall on the campus.
Supporters of seating Communist China in the United Nations reported progress on a resolution to grant a seat for Peking while leaving the status of Nationalist China unresolved. Diplomatic sources say the move aims to secure the broadest vote in favor of Pe king amid a China debate in New York.
Defense Secretary McNamara ordered that 17 year olds be barred from duty in South Viet Nam effective immediately. The change excludes sea duty and other overseas assignments, with fewer than 1 percent of the 148 380 troops in Viet Nam affected. All 17 year olds must now wait to complete four months of basic training before overseas service.
Clarence E. Drever treasurer of Standard Life Association died this morning at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a heart attack. He was 79 and a lifelong Douglas County resident with 45 years at the Standard Life Association. Funeral services set for 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Rumsey Funeral Home with Rev. Benton Roy Hanan officiating and Oak Hill Cemetery burial. Surviving are a daughter Mrs. Fred Rumsey and a sister Mrs. Eben Anderson.
Kansas University Chancellor W Clarke Wescoe will discuss professionalism at 8:30 tonight in Room 411 Summerfield Hall. The talk is sponsored by the KU chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
Lawrence residents describe a 34 bloom white chrysanthemum plant at Mrs. Ed Blevins 242 Perry Street and note other chrysanthemums and white roses unfazed by frost. Gayle Williams of Wichita and Alan Rutherford of Tyrone led 45 U. S. Air Force fighters in a bombing strike 2 miles southwest of Hanoi. The mission dropped nine tons of 730 pound bombs on a missile site support facility under light ground fire. Both captains spoke of satisfaction at striking the target and observed light defensive fire during the attack.
London report says Lord Hall a coal miner who rose to high government office died Monday. He was elected Labor MP for Aberdare in 1922 and held several ministerial posts during World War II.
The Lawrence PTA Council Advisory Committee on Curriculum discusses possible uses of recently enacted federal education funds. E J Logsdon, coordinator of the school’s federal program study and director of vocational education and adult education, will speak at 7 30 p m in room 10 Lawrence High School. The committee will also name members to review the foreign language program and report in spring.
Federal investigators demanded a $22 356 refund and removal of the Youth Corps program director in Kansas City Kansas after a month long inquiry. John M Ekeberg announced 77 youths were improperly employed and the program violated its mandate to aid poverty stricken youths. Cotitta denied intentional violations and said hires included youths who were culturally deprived or handicapped.
Sen Everett Dirksen and Sen Frank Carlson postponed a mid afternoon talk at Ahearn Fieldhouse Manhattan due to fog delaying Dirksen's takeoff from Orlando. The pair re routed via Chicago and Kansas City with a final Kansas City leg by private plane.
Lawrence Chamber of Commerce directors met at noon to discuss the United Fund drive industrial development and Sunflower Ordnance Works potential use for Hercules and DoD projects. They urged improved fund solicitation and planned a meeting with United Fund officials while noting upcoming conventions and local development prospects.

The confession signed by Duane E. Pope was read to a federal jury in Lincoln as prosecutors present the six page statement from the day of his surrender in Kansas City. Pope faces life in prison for the June 4 Big Springs Nebraska bank robbery and the killings of three employees and wounding of a fourth.
Emergency room treated a procession of minor injuries from Saturday to Monday. Patients include Jay Williams nine who cut eye, Steven Davis four with a laceration, Brenda Dillon ten with nails on a board, David Higgins sixteen months who fell from bed, Mary Been twenty three with a pinched leg, and Delbert Thomas thirteen who hurt his left ankle playing football.
The Kansas University Civic Action Committee schedules a 2 p.m. rally Wednesday on Mount Oread Campus or South Park to launch fund raising. The Marine Reserve Training Detachment Drill Team from Olathe will attend and a formation of F8 Crusader jets will pass over Mount Oread and Lawrence in salute.
