Mail bomb plot narrowly averted officials say
U S officials say a Yemen to Chicago mail bomb plot to blow up planes was narrowly foiled. A device passed Britain and another seized in Dubai had unknowingly flown on two passenger jets. Investigators assess potency and construction of two bombs linked to al Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula. Yemeni authorities pursued suspects but released a female student linked to the case. Officials say more packages may still be out there and discuss a surgical U S Yemen response with limited military involvement.

Brazil elects first female president Dilma Rousseff
Dilma Rousseff, a former Marxist guerrilla who was tortured and imprisoned during Brazil’s dictatorship, won the presidency with 56 percent of the vote over Jose Serra. The 62 year old will lead Brazil as it hosts the 2014 World Cup and seeks to become a top five economy amid new oil finds. Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva backed her, aiding a landmark shift while remaining a dominant figure in Brazilian politics.
