Exodus from military ranks includes Fort Riley soldiers
Five years from retirement John Connors of Lee's Summit Missouri is among tens of thousands leaving the armed forces as post Cold War cuts shrink the Army. Fort Riley hosted a job fair with over 60 companies hiring more than 300 soldiers plus a major airline and large trucking firms. Soldiers receive career help while some, like Connors, pursue civilian work and recall that disciplined service skills aid transitions. The Army trims to about 535,000 by 1995, with voluntary exits and bonuses expanding.
