German assaults on French lines near Cham Pagne region last night were repelled at several points, with heavy bombardment and gas shells. French forces captured prisoners as fighting continued around Tetan Casque and Mont Haut.
Thirty Douglas county men will miss Lawrences June session and have sent in registrations to the county clerk. Many more arrive by mail and in Lawrence with 270 registering in other counties. James O. Milligan of Kell is named deputy registrar for Vankell Institute to register Haskell students within age limits. estimated Haskell registration about 62.
Berlin based delegates led by Dr Eduard David state that their Stockholm conference program carries no German government endorsement. David says the delegation’s action binds only its party and that envoys hold no clear pledges or authorization from Berlin. The remarks signal limited government involvement in the socialist delegation’s agenda.
Rear Admiral Upshur died in Washington at 94 after heart failure. He was the oldest living naval academy graduate and longtime flag officers leader, with service under Commodore Perry and during the Civil War with Porter.
