19 year old from Lawrence gets probation in child sex case
Katherine Hernandez, 19, pleaded guilty to three counts of misdemeanor battery in Douglas County District Court after originally facing a sex crime against a child charge. Judge James McCabrin gave two years of supervised probation with credit for 14 months already served, citing Hernandez’s foster care, motherhood, therapy for past trafficking trauma, and age at the time of the 2017 incident. Hernandez, who came to the United States from El Salvador in 2011, faced a felony charge previously, but her sentence reflects mitigating factors and resolution of the case.
