Douglas County Emergency Management Director Teri Smith explains sirens activate when the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning for Douglas County or when local officials sense a tornado threat based on spotter and law enforcement reports. On May 21 sirens sounded countywide after a NWS warning tied to Shawnee County spotters and a moving storm, later narrowed to northwestern Douglas County, then southern Douglas County. No major damage followed.

Boy Hit by Pickup On Haskell Ward Streets In Lawrence
A 9 year old boy was struck by a northbound pickup on Haskell Avenue near Ward Avenue in eastern Lawrence. He sustained a concussion and minor road rash and was treated at a Topeka hospital. police said the driver saw children playing and the child ran into the street. Investigators had no update on a citation.

Fire Damages Riverside Home in Lawrence County Structure Blaze
Fire crews responded to a structure fire at Riverside Manufactured Home Community, 420 North St., about 7 p.m. Sunday. Owner Alicia Langford and her 4 year old daughter and mother Tonette Langford were inside. Tonette escaped safely after inhaling smoke. Firefighters pulled a burning mattress from a window and controlled the blaze by 7:45 p.m. The cause is under investigation.
