Budget veto ends Kansas Arts Commission funding
Kansas Governor Sam Brownback signed the $13.8 billion state budget but vetoed funds for the Kansas Arts Commission. The plan raises school aid cuts to $232 per student and trims social services while opposing criticism that arts funding would help attract federal dollars. Brownback praised the budget as fair amid a down economy despite a $500 million revenue shortfall. The Arts Commission staff faced layoffs after earlier closures and proposals to replace it with a private foundation were rejected by the legislature.
