Berkeley Park Protest Draws Massive March and Police Stand

Thousands of protesters massed for a march on the disputed three acres known as people park near UC Berkeley as 200 National Guard troops guard a fenced lot. Sheriff Madigan warned of force while organizers promise nonviolent action and a crowd potentially up to 50,000. Rector died from buckshot wounds days after disturbances. authorities cite a history of arrests and a tense standoff surrounding the intramural field turned protest site.

Surprise retirement party honors social worker Dieudonnee Roberts

Dieudonnee M. Roberts, a Douglas County welfare social worker for 31 years, was surprised with a retirement party attended by about 70 colleagues and friends. Speakers praised her personal involvement, noting her work with foster placements and numerous welfare cases since starting on February 1, 1938, when the WPA program ran the department. The event included current and former officials and co-workers from Kansas and nearby cities.

Lecompton Man Injured In Service Station Mishap

Fred E. Weeks 64 of Lecompton is in fairly good condition at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after his left hand was cut when pulled into a radiator fan while working on a car at Don's Phillips Service Station. He was transported by Citizens Ambulance. Police log notes four thefts and one vandalism incident including a $269 camera from Lawrence High School journalism room and other items stolen.

Boy 14 Dies After Motorcycle Crash In Kansas City

In Kansas City Kansas a 14 year old boy died Thursday night from head injuries after a motorcycle crash caused by a dog. The youth, Mike Meade, kicked at the dog attempting to bite him and lost control of his motorcycle.

Two Teen Drivers Hurt In Lone Star Road Crash

Richard R. McDow 17 and John P. Corbett 17 were treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a one car wreck on the Lone Star blacktop. McDow said brakes locked and the car slid into Washington Creek. Damage estimated at 500 dollars. Police reported 15 Thursday accidents in Lawrence.

University of Kansas 1969 Commencement Weekend Events

James Allen Battles 21 of undetermined address was treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a one car Kansas Turnpike crash about 7 15 am ten miles east of Lawrence. The 1969 car with Alabama plates went off the road struck a bridge and was totaled. Investigating patrolman report not available.

Lawrence Chamber seeks color slides for pictorial show

The Lawrence Chamber of Commerce asks citizens for color slides of Lawrence scenes for a 30 minute presentation titled The Five Seasons in Lawrence. Japanese woman claims world jet trip record

Miss Sanae Numata, 20, returned to Tokyo after a round the world journey by commercial jets in 52 hours and 4 minutes. She left Haneda at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and arrived back Thursday night, beating Takeshi Kori's previous record by about 7 hours. Her route included San Francisco, New York, London, Paris, Rome, Beirut, Tehran, New Delhi, Bangkok, and Hong Kong.

Fire damages limited after trash container blazes

Fire crews responded to two trash container fires at Gatehouse Apartments at 11 36 p m and Mrs T L Simmons home at 4 04 p m with no damage reported. A small siding area was damaged at 1505 W 22nd St causing no injuries and the cause remains undetermined.
