First of 5 robbery defendants gets 3.5 years in prison
Driskell Alan Johnson, 20, pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated robbery for a November 8, 2014 home invasion in the 900 block of Arkansas Street. He pistol whipped residents, stole over $1,000 in cash and $1,000 in marijuana. Johnson testified at Patterson’s trial. He received 42 months in prison with time served, post release supervision, and 15 years violent offender registration. The sentence is a downward departure from guidelines. Other co-defendants await sentencing in June.

Chamber weighs free land incentives for Venture Park deals
The Chamber outlines an incentive package for Venture Park tenants and how to value land given the city’s nonpurchase of the Farmland Industries site. It received about 8.5 million in trust funds for environmental cleanup and about 6 million remains, plus 8 million spent on infrastructure to recoup via special assessments. Prospects’ timelines remain unclear and officials pursue a 10 acre site as Brady Pollington notes. In other news, Peaslee Tech near 29th Street and Haskell Avenue has about 40 students enrolled for fall with a goal of 100 in year one, and the Lawrence School District plans a College & Career Center next to Peaslee in August with 200 high school students enrolled.
