A Panhandle Eastern Pipeline break in Franklin County Kansas near Lawrence caused a large fire seen from miles away. No injuries were reported as crews worked to shut valves and repair the line west of Williamsburg. residents were not endangered and a gas zone was turned off.

Hoskins Cambridge MA Walter Meek Madison Walfrijole Tex.
Topeka workers resume major construction after an eight week shutdown as the carpenters union agrees to a wage settlement. The accord raises carpent ers pay by 1 75 cents over the current hourly rate with another boost due January 1. The carpenters had sought higher terms.

A threatened strike by AFL Switchmen’s Union of North America set for Thursday was canceled as prospects for settlement of the wage hour dispute with Western railroads improved. The union seeks a 40 hour week at current pay for 43 hours plus extra pay for Saturdays and Sundays. National Mediator Francis A. O’Neill Jr. announced the halt of the walkout.
Lawrence recreation director Larry Heeh outlined a broad summer program for youths at a Rotary meeting. The effort, supported by RE, CU, and city schools, includes workshops, a summer teaching clinic, odd jobs through the registration office, baseball leagues, a morning player run, band, swimming, art, Boy Scouts, playgrounds, model airplanes, an FTA reading program, and a beginner typing class.
Wayne LeRoy Atwood, a junior at RK U from Smith Center, won the annual Pr Arthur J Boynton Economics scholarship. The $50 prize honors Dr Boynton and is awarded to the department’s most outstanding economics junior. Dr John Ise, economics professor, selected him with university approval.
Hollywood May 28 Robert Rossen earned his second directing honor for All The King's Men after winning an Oscar from the Academy. He received the Art Directors Guild gold plaque for best directing of 1949. A separate Chicago robbery report describes a thief in men’s clothing grabbing two garatches and tossing them into a waste basket, muttering "Junk."
City records show May permits for private construction totaling 81,380 with eight for new homes. Willard Larkin, the building inspector, notes May 1950 activity aligns with a strong year for private residential work, including a grocery store permit at 42 North Seventeenth Street and numerous additions, garages, and remodels across local properties.
An Egyptian medical student Tamir B el Naffrawi attacked three professors during an exam in Ceiro. Police and the assailant shot two professors, Richard Wheeler Haines and Mahnead El Hatrawy, and clubbed Dr Doughin B Deryry with a metal stake, injuring them.
In Douglas County 79 graduates and two others not pictured were promoted from eighth to ninth grade at Liberty Memorial High School auditorium. Emma Berg, state superintendent of schools, handed diplomas to scholars from 40 schools. The photo lists graduates in three rows with numerous names and hometowns.
Memorial day picnickers are urged to bring umbrellas as the weather bureau predicts showers tomorrow across the eastern half of the country from the plains to the Atlantic coast. Rain is expected in the afternoon with temperatures near normal. Western plains, the Rocky Mountains, and the Pacific coast expect fair, partly cloudy conditions with normal temperatures.

A quiet holiday unfolds in Lawrence with two veterans memorials planned at Oak Hill cemetery and Memorial York. Rain delays spring horse show and opens J C Carl League baseball, while local rider Patty Broom and ponies vie in children's and five gaited classes at Hilltop Riding Club.
