Honecker leads youth delegates from multiple nations while Soviet memorials and Whitsun demonstrations unfold.
Kansas City meat cutter protests have not yet disrupted Lawrence cafes and restaurants by noon today. Drivers refused to cross picket lines while one firm used a non union supervisor as a trucker. Prospects for next week remain unclear as deliveries continue variably from Liberal Cash and Carry and cleaners at 1113 Man.
In Miaral Florida on May 27 Senator Kefauver led a Senate investigation into nationwide crime and gambling, with Senators Hunt and Halley present. Witnesses included IRS official Jin Hiewn and others as the panel met behind guarded doors to probe alleged bribes and syndicate activity amid secrecy.
Hartford reports the libel suit by entertainers Draper and Adler against Greenwich housewife Mrs. Hester McCullough nears a verdict after a four week trial. Alexandre J. Belford, general secretary of the Educational Institute of Scotland, will lecture at the University of Kansas on August 1 on expanding views of education. S. tour of teacher training institutions. He is involved in U. Frank Stranahan of Toronto Ohio captured his second British amateur title at St Andrews Scotland, defeating Dick Chapman of Pinehurst NC in a 64 hole final. Stranahan built a three hole morning lead, then expanded it after a gusty, rainy day to win by the margins described, while Chapman struggled with his best play slipping to over par.
The Sumer Muse program will start with four Rinups for grade schoolers, a band, an orchestra, and two groups for junior and senior high youths plus an orchestral ensemble. Instruction on various instruments will be offered. Participants should report Monday morning at 8:30 to the high auditorium for enrollment. Former students and community adults may join the summer band. Director Jack R Stephenson and RL Wayne Nelson announced nine concerts over six weeks, including a Fourth of July show, ending July 7. University of Kansas will be represented by Dean Laurence C. Woodruff on a midshipmen cruise aboard the Missouri, leaving from Norfolk June am for a six week Atlantic coastal voyage. The convoy includes seven destroyers and will visit New England and Caribbean ports before returning to Hampton Roads around July 14. About 24 KU NROTC students will sail, alongside 21 from seven other colleges. Mrs. Woodruff and their daughter will accompany the dean to Norfolk and tour Virginia while he participates in the voyage.
Ottawa May 22 1 suit filed in Miami county district court challenges legality of the Lane rural high school district expansion. Robert H Milla Miami county attorney leads residents contesting altered boundary description and election notice. The petition seeks February 25 section set aside as the district grows from 1 ½ to 4 square miles with most of the Miami county portion.
Two automobile accidents were reported by city police yesterday afternoon. The occupants of the cars were not injured. At 2 43 p.m a car driven by Charles Bane ning collided at Seventh and Ver Mont street. The second crash happened at the street repair barricade at Tenth and Massachusetts Street about 6 m. Officers said the two cars were southbound and collided while going around the barricade. The drivers were H R Smith 742 Connecticut Street and BD Warwick Kansas City Mo.
Flood warnings issued for Lawrence area as the Wakarusa river stayed within banks overnight. River observer reported the stream near the 16.88 foot level, while the Kaw at the dam rose to 1135 feet and then leveled. Traffic disruptions persisted with closures on highway 4 between Lawrence and Topeka and detours via Highway 40 as showers lingered.
At Haskell Institute 188 graduates heard Jamies H Hyde urge repayment of the education debt through honest work and service to the tribe. He warned against superiority from learning, urging graduates to engage in community progress while exercising their franchise. Superintendent Solon Avera announced 1050 high school diploma candidates and the campus bustle followed with a senior alumni dance and departures of students and families returning home.
Topeka May 27 counsel for Robert Anderson convicted of first degree murder last week seeks a new trial for the 19 year old Army sergeant from Oakland California. A motion filed in district court reports new evidence and alleges trial errors. Anderson was found guilty of slaying Miss Irene Gilbert with a jury recommending life imprisonment. A ruling is expected next week.
