Coast braced for hurricane season as Floyd nears coast
As Floyd neared the Atlantic coast last September the Vitkauskas family fled inland in a two hour bumper to bumper crawl. More than 3 million people left coastal Florida Georgia and the Carolinas in the biggest peacetime evacuation. Officials plan better planning and one way inland traffic for 2000. Forecasters predict a period of intense hurricanes over the next two decades and urge all residents to have a plan. Florida Georgia and South Carolina improve evacuations warnings shelters and communications. Floyd caused 70 deaths and 6 billion in damage before Irene followed a month later. The 2000 season could be less active but intense hurricane activity may continue.
