Roosevelt Requests 3.3 Billion for Army and Navy Planes

President Roosevelt asked Congress for an additional 3.319 billion for army and navy planes. The move may push defense expenditures beyond 31 billion in this and the next fiscal year. Most funds would boost production above the 5.1 billion cash outlay target through July 1, 1942. The rest would cover existing orders and post date deliveries as hearings resume on the war department supply bill.

Welfare residue decision debated by Douglas County board

Douglas County commissioners met with township and school representatives to decide whether to allocate all sales tax residue to the welfare fund this year under a new state law. If used this year the fund would gain about 19 to 20 thousand dollars, while next year about 63 thousand could go to welfare. A fallback option risks losing access to the state welfare equalization fund if the county declines the increased share. The tentative 1942 welfare budget must reach the state welfare department by June 1.
