President Taft sent a letter to House Appropriations Chairman Tawney expressing deep resentment at Democratic criticisms in the house debate over the presidents traveling expenses. He protested what he called reflections on Southern hospitality and urged restraint in remarks about official costs.
A gas blast at the Long Brothers building in Kansas City on May 27 prompted a blaze that trapped residents on upper floors. Thirty five people including fifteen tailors were rescued by fire crews via ladders. no fatalities reported. Loss is estimated around $100,000 as firefighters kept the fire under control.
Indy May 27. Three days of racing began at the Indianapolis speedway on a 2 1/2 mile brick course with sixty starters. The 100 mile test, practice mishap injures Oldfield, Buick and Jackson cars withdrawn, officials bar entries, later allow disputes to stand after meeting with AA A officials.
Mrs. Sarah Burkle aged 42 died this morning at the family home southwest of the city from heart trouble. Funeral announcement will be made later.
Lawrence assessors finish real estate totals showing city valuation at 7,453,350 up from 6,422,220 two years earlier, a gain of about 1,031,130. Much improvement work began after March. the fair grounds addition was only annexed March 7, 190?. The report deems the showing satisfactory.

General manager Mr. Kennedy ordered straw and shavings to improve footing, making grounds comfortable and safe for families. Markets by wire from Kansas City report grain and livestock prices with wheat at July 89 back to Sept 88 cents, corn mixed around 56 to 58 cents, oats 40 to 42 cents, rye 70 to 72 cents, and hay values. Butter and eggs steady. cattle receipts around 4,000 with steer prices near 8.90 to 8.10, cows and heifers about 15 to 7.25, hog receipts 3,000 with tops near 9.60 and 9.50. Chicago and New York markets listed with wheat around 102 to 94 cents, corn 56 to 58 cents, oats 37 to 36 cents, pork and lard futures noted, and New York money market at 3 percent.
Emil Steinbring a Parker shop tailor says two heavyset Negro men jumped from an alley between Rhode Island and Connecticut streets around 10 PM and held him up taking 55 cents. He reported the crime to Night Watchman Munroe but officers found no trace.
May 27 reports chronicled massive foreign selling of wheat that day, causing wide price swings across the pit. Prices for May and September moved sharply as traders noted a firm counterforce from an independent corn rally and a buying push by a major firm led by a former wheat bull. Calais May 27 Hope that any of the twenty seven men aboard the French submarine Pulgoise sunk by the Vas De Calais yesterday would survive faded as divers report the hull crushed by the collision. Torpedo boats dredgers and divers battled strong currents to salvage the vessel from 100 feet of water without success. By noon little progress was made and the Pluivoise drifted from view as search efforts continued.
St Paul May 27 Attorney General Charles West of Oklahoma condemned parts of the federal railroad bill during a speech. He argued against an amendment that would strip the railway company of its powers and warned the proposal could harm the industry.
University of Kansas prepares for spring graduation with seniors in caps and gowns during Friday chapel. Prof. E Miller bids farewell in a moving address, praised for lifelong devotion.
