Mrs. John F. Kennedy views mementos of her late husband in New York during a traveling exhibit preview. The 47th birthday of John F. Kennedy is marked by an NBC television program. The display runs at IBM’s building and travels to Harvard and other cities through October 18.
CAPE KENNEDY Fla AP The first attempt to orbit an unmanned Apollo model was postponed to Thursday due to a frozen nitrogen valve in ground support gear. After three hours of efforts the NASA called off the shot for two days to replace the valve and test the new system.
Wescoe will attend Army Navy and Air Force commissioning ceremonies at Murphy Hall at 11 a.m. then join a 3 p.m. university reception for graduating seniors and guests in the Union lounge. An EU alumni citation meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. in Wescoe’s office before the Commencement procession down Campanile Hill, with Gov. John Anderson and the Kansas Board of Regents speaking.
In Cambridge Maryland a National Guardsman was shot and three others injured during a clash between integrationist demonstrators and troops using tear gas and bayonets. Bullets bricks and bottles flew near the Negro district as hundreds of whites jeered across the street.
About 100 men raided a non union housing project in Society Hill Philadelphia smashing locks stealing materials and injuring six workers. The attack damaged 12 houses in five minutes with $15000 in destruction as workers fled through side streets near Independence Hall. Roy Furman, renovating the project, said he pays union wages and had warned of trouble.
Washington AP report says the House Foreign Affairs Committee rejected a dismissal authority for AID and approved a $3.5 billion aid authorization. The panel added $125 million for South Vietnam and, 16 to 6, backed Rep. H R Gross’s amendment to remove the selection-out authority for AID margin employees in Washington.
Kansas Board of Regents approved 1965 fiscal year budgets for Wichita State University and Pittsburg State College. Wichita State’s budget is 4.582 million, first as a state institution, up from 4.434 million. Pittsburg State College budget is 4.606 million, up from 4.217 million. Total educational operating budgets reach 75.3 million, with out of state travel allocations including 40 thousand to KU and KState, 7.5 thousand to KU Medical Center, and 12 thousand to several state schools.
Fire at the 18th century Wegimont castle vacation retreat in Liege Belgium killed 19 people. Police report two victims died leaping from windows in panic as flames spread from a kitchen fire likely caused by an electric short circuit. About 90 guests were housed there.
Kansas City AP reports jury selection started in U S District Court for John George Gessner a former Army private accused of transmitting data on nuclear weapons to Russian agents.
The House Education and Labor Committee approved the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 by a 1912 vote, despite solid Republican opposition. The bill would create Job Corps centers for young women ages 16 to 22, bar direct federal school funding for community action programs, and set state allocation formulas for funding.
G Harold Lavely, manager, said the Tecumseh plant contributed over 5 million to area economy last year. Payroll ne arly 3.6 million with 500 employees on average. purchases totaled 1 173 000 from Kansas suppliers and firms in Kansas City Mo. Plant operated since 1958 as part of Du Pont Film Department.
Four University graduate attended Iliff School of Theology and California College in China with an M A in Chinese studies. He taught and pastored in China from 1924 to 1948 and was ordered out in 1948. He then pastored in Kansas and edited Christian Advocate and Together from 1953 to 1963.
The House approved a military construction appropriation bill sending it to the Senate. It includes 15.1 million dollars to acquire additional land at Fort Riley Kansas to nearly double the reservation size to 51,092 acres. The land would support field training and tire firing of weapons for the Strategic Army Corps division stationed there. The Army had requested 16.1 million to buy 49,500 acres.
The downtown area reported an unofficial record high of 98 degrees by 2 p.m. surpassing the official date high of 96 degrees set in 1953. Forecasters expect showers tonight and a drop in temperatures with cooler readings on Wednesday.
In Lawrence the planning department reports a grass blade has grown through a window sill. The larger blade exceeds 7 percent inches, prompting a Keep Off the Grass sign and a growth record in the window. Also, Anita Heffernan of Downey California is named as the sister of Paul Kites for a June 3 Queen for a Day segment. The Los Angeles area group includes parents of children with metabolic disorders and the program airs at 2 30 p.m. on Channel 9.
Mrs. Carl Hunzicker is memorial chairman for the Douglas County Cancer unit of the Kansas Cancer Society. Donations in memory of friends or relatives may be sent to Mrs. Hunzicker at 2234 Tenn. St. Funds from memorials support cancer research.
Pat Read of 445 Tenn. St. reported a morning sighting showing area deer numbers rising. A small doe was chased by dogs near the Kaw River, swam across to the east shore, then fled northward past a startled fisherman. The deer appeared unharmed.
About 200 people are expected for a Wednesday banquet honoring Dick Harp, former Kansas University basketball coach who will become deputy director of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Kansas City on July 1. The dinner at 7 p.m. in the Kansas Room of the KU Union is sponsored by Harp’s friends following his resignation in March after eight years as KU coach.

Les Nesmith son of Mr and Mrs Dean Nesmith of 1025 Ala St returned today from the Philippines where he attended medical school for a year. After completing school work he took a lengthy trip through several countries and will attend Kansas University Medical Center again this summer.
Twenty two eighth grade students at St Johns Catholic School will receive diplomas at 7:30 p m Thursday in St Johns Church with Rev Joseph Staudinger presenting. The ceremony includes a May crowning with Anita DeGraff leading a wreath placement by Vicky Chavez and Martha Hill, and Vicky Roska hr carrying the crown.
Chester England AP Mary Riley a 77 year old widow was killed Monday by four dogs she had known since they were puppies. She was found by her daughter inside the dogs compound. Dr John Wakeley described the scene as ghastly with 200 to 300 claw marks on her back.
A buck was hit and killed by a motorist about 10 miles north of Leavenworth on U S 73 with no injuries to the driver. Earlier on Monday a separate deer collision occurred inside Topeka city limits at the east end of the city.
President Johnson signed a bill authorizing 312 million dollars in U S aid to the International Development Association securing a 750 million dollar replenishment from 17 nations over three years beginning July 1 1965. The measure ensures IDA capital for long term easy payments to underdeveloped countries and ended House opposition after debate and committee referrals.
Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara told reporters U S force leaders in Vietnam have a blank check on arms and manpower and top priority access to Defense Department resources. He denied claims that the conflict is illegal or “McNamara's war” and said South Vietnamese want to win with U S support. Senator Morse’s charge drew sharp rebuttal during a Senate Armed Services briefing.
