School Opening Ruled by Court

The Supreme Court ordered Prince Edward County Virginia to reopen its public schools desegregated by next September. Justice Black said federal courts may order openings to guarantee Negro students receive equal education, with possible new parties added if needed.

York in satisfactory condition at Veterans Hospital

Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Alvin York, 76, was admitted to a Nashville Veterans Hospital for internal hemorrhaging. Doctors halted the bleeding hours after arrival by ambulance, but York will remain in the hospital several days. He lives on a Pall Mall, Tennessee mountain farm.

New Orleans Mourns Morrison In Plane Crash Toll

New Orleans paused to honor deLesseps Morrison a former mayor and ambassador who died in a Mexico crash. His body will lie in state 24 hours at Gallier Hall. Seven perished including Morrison and his young son. The crash occurred in Tamaulipas storms. others killed include Ovide Cenac Raleigh Pellegrin and Carolyn Vandergrift. Morrison to receive full military honors and a western mass planned in St Louis Cathedral.

Senator Dirksen said a leadership sponsored package of civil rights bill amendments may be introduced Tuesday. A fourth conference of Republican senators was called a pretty agreeable meeting as they plan to meet after lunch to consider additional amendments proposed by individual senators.

Deer Killed on Turnpike. Driver Not Injured

A deer was killed Saturday about 5:20 p.m. after running into a westbound car on the Kansas Turnpike seven miles east of the Lawrence service area. The driver, Frank Crandall, 48, of Denver, Colo., escaped injury. The deer struck the windshield, broke the glass, and caused $200 damage to the vehicle. Later that night a trailer towed behind a station wagon caught fire on the Turnpike about 11 miles from the service area. the trailer was gutted.

Three Men Held In French Kidnap Victim Rescued

Paris reports three men described as little gangsters are in custody for the kidnapping of Mrs. Marcel Dassault wife of a wealthy French warplane builder. She says she was not mistreated during 35 hours and aided by her captors before her release after gendarmes found the hideout. A fourth man is still sought.

In Kansas City Kansas two bandits held a supermarket staff of about a dozen for over an hour and tried to crack the safe. They retreated after firing at officers and tossing their revolvers into a bucket as police surrounded the scene.

Two Hospitalized And Five Injured In City Mishaps

In Lawrence three traffic accidents over the weekend left two people hospitalized and five others injured. Charles Neale and William M. Williams were treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in fair to good condition. Neale’s passenger Ann Simmons and other drivers and passengers were treated and released. A motorcyclist and a number of other riders sustained cuts, bruises, and minor injuries. Damages included two-car and motorcycle incidents with totals around $700 in one crash and smaller amounts in others.
