Kansas University Chancellor Archie Dykes thanked parents at the senior class supper for their support over four years. The ceremony honored faculty award winners, Distinguished Service City recipients, and alumni life members while stressing education as a beginning.

Correction on endowment meeting and 25th and Iowa crash

The Journal-World corrects two items from Monday’s edition. The executive committee of the Kansas University Endowment Association is Howard Immel, Balfour Jeffrey, Robert Riss, Dolph Simons Sr., Irvin Youngberg and Lloyd Ruppenthal, not the finance committee. In a Sunday evening two car crash at 25th and Iowa, Maxine R. Kunkle suffered minor injuries. Scott Salome 17, escaped unharmed. Damages were $1,000 to the Kunkle car and $800 to the Salome car.

Lawrence resident among 169 honored at KU Medical Center

Lawrence's Robert Albers received the Charles and Mary Francis Award for neurology at the Kansas University Medical Center College of Health Sciences graduation ceremony. Special awards went to 48 other graduates during the KUMC event.

Kansas 1976 wheat progress shows 80 percent at heading by weekend, five points above the 75 percent average. Southeast and south central fields turning color. early May freeze causing 25 to 50 percent reductions in some east central counties. Barley yellow dwarf virus and leaf blotch reported. rains boost soil moisture in the northwest while west and south central need more rain. Corn 80 percent planted, sorghum 15 percent, soybeans 10 percent.

Graduation Commencement Amid Fireworks And Hijinks

Paper airplanes, a hip flask, bottle rockets, and a Roman candle adorned the ceremony until Dean Charles Kahn announced sculptor Bernard Frazier’s death. Parents shared in the moment as they recalled early days with their graduates.

Prison Director resigns for Alaska post

Raymond Maynard director of the Kansas State Penitentiary resigns to join the Alaska Department of Corrections. He will turn 46 on June 5 and had served in Kansas since March 14, 1975 after earlier work in Georgia corrections.
