Freedom riders depart under guard from Montgomery

Eleven freedom riders, white and Black, leave Montgomery under heavy National Guard and police protection for New Orleans. A convoy of about 75 guardsmen and 100 patrolmen was ordered to shield the group on their route to the Mississippi line amid renewed segregation tensions and ongoing recruitment of more activists.

Eichmann Faces Murder Charge in Lidice Case Trial

In Jerusalem AP report Adolf Eichmann is charged with the killing of Lidice’s children. Prosecution links Czech villagers’ 1942 massacre of Heydrich to Eichmann’s Berlin Gestapo post with documents showing 88 Lidice children sent to Lodz. 81 vanished, likely perished in extermination. A key letter to Eichmann asked how to handle the 81 unfit children, answered with special treatment in Auschwitz. Also noted Great Barrier Reef sharks number 108 species with eight man-eaters.

Baker University to demo new high energy accelerator

Baker University will host a public demonstration of a home built high energy accelerator led by Prof. M L Roush and students. The AEC has lent 32 grams of plutonium for Baker experiments though not arriving for Thursday. Kennedy to Ask For Fund Boost

President Kennedy will address Congress in person on Thursday to request higher funding for space, foreign aid, and other programs. House leaders interrupted debate on a defense bill to announce the joint session at 12 50 p m Kennedy is expected to press a larger fallout shelter program for civilian protection and to spur the American space program and foreign policy efforts.

Wakarusa Valley plans Friday graduation of eighth grade

Twenty five Wakarusa Valley School eighth graders will graduate in special exercises at 8 p.m. Friday in the school auditorium. City Officials Make Appointments and Annexation Ruling

City commissioners appointed Lee Zimmerman to the Traffic Commission and reappointed Huff Robertson and Winyard while naming Mrs. Conrad McGrew to the Hospital Board and Mrs. A B Ewing to the Library Board. A district court voided annexation of Kasold Terrace due to a procedural lapse. A shelter house bid of 17649 was accepted for Centennial Park. Parking removals were approved along several streets, tractor purchase for Park Department authorized, paving petitions and sewer/street plans approved in multiple additions, and J B Young’s requests to vacate properties were turned down with Planning Commission minutes approved. Commissioner Cooper dissented.
