Saigon AP reports 42 U S planes and helicopters were lost in the past week, lifting total U S aircraft casualties to 5,388 since 1961. The week saw 27 helicopters and 15 fixed-Wing craft destroyed or lost, with losses offset by official statements on ongoing air campaign and ground fighting near Saigon, Dak To, and the Central Highlands.
Washington AP Judge Warren E Burger weighs continuing as a Mayo Foundation trustee paying $2,000 annually for four days of meetings. He has acknowledged receiving $7,500 total from 1963 to 1968 plus earlier work, joining other public members like Lyndon B. Johnson on the Mayo board.
Rained out track events were moved to Saturday with walking races slotted between 10 a.m. and noon. Other Saturday morning events proceed as scheduled to fit the revised plan.
Rev Lawrence A Parker 41 of Kansas City Missouri was granted a three year parole by the Douglas County district court. He had been sentenced March 12 to one to five years for obtaining money under false pretenses. Parker was taken to the Kansas State Diagnostic Center at Topeka on March 21 and returned to Douglas County before his release on probation. A district court jury found him guilty.
The Douglas County Trail Riders sponsor a registered quarter horse show starting at 9 a.m. Sunday at the club arena five and one half miles west of Lawrence on Highway 40 then 1.5 miles north. Halter classes begin at 9 a.m. and performance classes follow in the afternoon with lunch on the grounds.
North Dakota National Guard spent 23124 to clear about 2000 to 3000 youths from Zap after destruction and fights during a May 9 beer bust. Maj. Gen. L A Melhouse submitted the bill to the State Emergency Commission, covering pay for 500+ guardsmen and transport.
Dolph Simons Journal-World editor presided at the annual joint meeting of the boards of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and its Omaha branch. Simons serves as chairman of the Tenth District with branches in Denver Oklahoma City and Omaha. J L Robertson of Washington attended as vice chairman of the Board of Governors. Directors discussed current economic and monetary developments and other policy matters.
Sirhan Bishara Sirhan, condemned assassin of Senator Robert F Kennedy, reached San Quentin Death Row after a predawn transfer from Los Angeles. He joined 77 other death row inmates in Cell 33 near the gas chamber as California faces long delays in carrying out executions.
Three cars at the Delta Tau Delta fraternity house parking lot were burglarized with losses of 297.50 in stereo tapes and cases and a recovered tape player. Additional thefts and one vandalism incident were reported, including a 1930 Model A Ford taken and recovered, a missing 325 television, a guitar, a revolver, and damaged property across several local addresses.
The 30 day forecast from mid May to mid June calls for below normal temperatures with unusually cloudy days noted in November 1968 and January 1969. Funnel cloud sightings rise while tornadoes remain fewer. Rainfall totals in April varied by region, with several areas above normal and others below. Mrs. Charles Rains of Salina says pools will open but weather delays linger.
The Kansas University campus relaxes as finals end and commencement begins with two ceremonies for graduates. Chancellor Wescoe will speak at both events, with honors awarded to Dr. David W. Robinson and Martha Peterson on June 1 and four more alumni on June 2.
Lawrence High School senior Edward George Lanning 17 was named winner of a 280 Journal-World scholarship for former carrier boys. The award was presented by Garran Allison during the senior awards assembly. Lanning plans to enter Kansas University this fall.
