City rules ban planting near street corners and in right of way

Public Works Director George Williams outlines city code forbidding trees within 50 feet of corner curblines and within the street triangle. Regulations require at least one inch diameter trees, tree guards in some cases, and no planting within one foot of curb or sidewalk or in narrow curb sidewalk spaces. The city may remove wrongly placed plantings, and complaints go to parks and recreation at 832-3450.

Postal service food drive a hit

A food drive by local mail carriers collected 12 700 pounds of goods for city food banks. Local 104 president Terry Johnson said the response surprised him, noting some streets had abundant donations while others had none. Carriers collected cans and dry goods from mailboxes Saturday and distributed them to five area food banks. The effort marks the first year local carriers joined the drive, which began last year in 200 cities and expanded nationwide.
